Three Newcastle same sex couples to be amongst the first in Australia to marry on January 9 thanks to Sassy Celebrants

Newcastle : Sassy Celebrants will join with other local wedding industry professional to provide free services to any couple who wants to marry on January 9, 2018. Three three couples are confirmed to participate in the celebrations

Renowned wedding venue 48 Watt Street, Watt Street Newcastle will provide the backdrop for the three Newcastle-based couples who will be amongst the first in Australia to marry under the new amendments to the Marriage Act.

For two of the couples who will legally marry on January 9, this ceremony will be legalising their relationship in the eye of the law, having already celebrated their relationship with a non-legal commitment ceremony in front of family and friends before the laws were changed. The third couple has waited for this historic day to show their commitment to one another.

“As celebrants, we have the privilege of legalising relationships into marriages every weekend. In recent years Sassy Celebrants has conducted many, many non-legal commitment ceremonies for those that under previous law couldn’t legally marry each other,” said Kez Tippett of Sassy Celebrants, co-ordinator of the event.
“When the law was changed, we decided that on the first day it was legal for any couple to marry, regardless of gender, we would offer our services for free. For us, this represents a celebration of what is means to have marriage equality in Australia,” said Kez.
“We are thrilled that not just one, but three couples took us up on the offer as soon as we were permitted to accept their paperwork. It’s such a privilege for Sassy and our partners to be part of such a momentous day in Australian history,” concluded Kez.

Newcastle photographers Ben Howland, Curly Tree Photography and Thierry Boudan will shoot the ceremonies, Hunter Valley Video and Eluminate will film this historic moment and Gloss Girl Bridal Story will provide hair and makeup.
